It’s going to be a busy summer for Livingston, who appears in the supernatural horror film The Conjuring with Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson (in theaters July 19). The actor — perhaps best known for playing disgruntled employee Peter Gibbons in 1999′s Office Space — will also appear in the new season of HBO’s Boardwalk Empire this fall.

DeWitt, meanwhile, stars in the upcoming drama Touchy Feely. Directed by Lynn Shelton, the film will be released on demand Aug. 1 and in theaters Sept. 6.

Don’t blame Apple, blame the tax code

big fish rarely seen in Washington: Apple CEO Tim Cook. It released a 40-page report on the eve of the hearing, excoriating Apple’s use of “gimmicks” to avoid paying U.S. taxes on $44 billion in offshore income between 2009 and 2012.

Chaired by Sen. Carl Levin, D-Michigan, the subcommittee has been investigating the tax avoidance strategies of major U.S. tech firms. Last year, Microsoft and Hewlett-Packard were in the dock; Tuesday, it was Apple’s turn.

“Apple wasn’t satisfied with shifting its profits to a low-tax offshore tax haven,” Levin told the New York Times. “It has created offshore entities holding tens of billions of dollars while claiming to be tax resident nowhere.”

At issue are foreign subsidiaries that U.S. multinationals use to manage their overseas operations. The subcommittee report says that tech companies can shuffle their intellectual property as well as earnings among such entities to shield them from America’s steep corporate tax rates.

Cook, however, denied that Apple funnels any of its U.S. profits into offshore tax havens.

The company has amassed more than $100 billion in foreign earnings, he said, because international sales of iPhones and other products account for 61% of its revenues. Apple pays taxes in the countries where its products are sold, he told the panel, adding that it is probably also America’s largest corporate taxpayer, with expected 2013 liabilities of $7 billion.

The Senate inquisitors aren’t accusing the tech companies of doing anything illegal but of cleverly exploiting loopholes in U.S. tax laws that allow them to shelter income overseas. Lawmakers want the firms to “repatriate” their overseas profits so that they can be taxed here. But the companies say that would be tantamount to taxing them twice, putting them at a disadvantage with foreign competitors who pay taxes only where their products are sold.

At a time when America urgently needs to rebuild its revenue base and continue unwinding its public debts, it’s little wonder that lawmakers cast a covetous eye on the overseas profits of U.S. firms. But while grilling CEOs may make for good political theater, it doesn’t get to the heart of the problem: America’s outdated and dysfunctional corporate tax code.

How flawed is it? Let us count the ways. First, it subjects U.S.-based corporations to a top marginal rate of 35%, among the highest in the world. Designed at a time when U.S. companies competed mainly with each other, the code now hobbles them in global competition.

Second, the code is riddled with special tax deductions, credits and exemptions, which make it both fiendishly complicated and economically inefficient. As economist Robert Shapiro noted in a recent Progressive Policy Institute study, these provisions entail significant administrative and compliance costs and, more damagingly from the standpoint of economic growth, undercut markets’ ability to allocate capital to its most productive uses. They also make the code highly inequitable as some companies get breaks while others don’t with little rhyme or reason other than how effective their lobbyists are.

Third, the United States is one of the few remaining countries (PDF) that has a “worldwide” tax system, meaning that we apply the 35% top rate to the worldwide profits of U.S-based companies: that is, on the profits made by foreign subsidiaries as well. Almost every other major economy has a territorial tax system, which taxes only the business profits earned in that country. While U.S. companies get a credit for the taxes they pay overseas, they are still liable for the difference between what they pay abroad and the higher U.S. marginal tax rate.

These glaring defects have engendered a rare bipartisan consensus in Washington for sweeping reform of the corporate tax code. The basic idea, endorsed by the Obama administration and House Ways and Means Chairman Dave Camp, is to radically simplify the code by phasing out special preferences and using some or all of the revenues to cut the tax rate. (Progress toward reform is snagged, however, on a dispute over whether any of those revenues should be used for deficit reduction.)

More controversial is adopting a territorial system. Some progressives are leery of this approach, since it would put the foreign earnings of U.S.-based companies forever beyond Washington’s reach. But as Progressive Policy Institute economist Michael Mandel notes, those foreign profits are already taxed by the countries in which the money is earned. In today’s increasingly globalized economy, it makes sense to move toward a simpler system that is easier to enforce.

Unlike Apple, U.S. lawmakers have the power to fix our broken corporate tax system. That’s probably a better use of their time than villainizing America’s most innovative and successful companies.

Forgive and forget? Easier said than done. It seemed for a while that Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart‘s relationship was back on track after the actress’ cheating scandal last summer with her married Snow White and the Huntsman director, Rupert Sanders, but in truth, Pattinson, 27, never really got over the incident. Sources tell Us Weekly the Twilight actor had a difficult time moving on after Stewart’s fling — and he wasn’t shy about letting her know.

“He really put her through the ringer,” one insider tells Us. “Ultimately, it was like, ‘Either we move past this or we don’t.’ It wasn’t good for either of them.”

Indeed, as the new issue of Us Weekly reveals, the Cosmopolis star repeatedly used Stewart’s tryst against her in arguments between the two, which happened with increasing frequency toward the end of their relationship. “Rob always brings up the cheating scandal to Kristen,” a second source tells Us. “He hangs it over her head.”

Time will tell whether the couple’s recent split is a temporary break or a permanent breakup, but for now, at least, they’re living separate lives. “They’re both good people,” the first source tells Us. “It was just not the right thing for either of them right now.”

She may have flown into France just hours earlier, but Heidi Klum looked anything but jet-lagged as she arrived on the red carpet on Thursday evening.

The German supermodel, 39, looked glowing as she turned on the glamour in a retro-styled ensemble at the Cannes Film Festival premiere of Nebraska.

The Project Runway star showed off plenty of skin in a daring ’80s style asymmetrical Versace gown with gem-studded detailing.

She teamed her striking ensemble with flicked waves, Lorraine Schwartz jewellery and a pair of silver high-heeled sandals.

Heidi ended up travelling to the Croisette via speedboat after checking into the Hôtel du Cap-Eden Roc several miles away.

During her boat trip, she posed for a photo on her cameraphone, uploading it to Twitter, saying: ‘Such a beautiful day in Cannes!’

The Jurassic Park star, 46, may have been influenced by the release of The Great Gatsby due to her choice of 1920s-esque fringed gown.

Best Picture (Drama) for George Clooney.

The mysteries of conception were explained to the Queen today as she toured a world-leading research institute dubbed the “Nobel Prize factory”.

The Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh arrived at the Laboratory of Molecular Biology (LMB) in Cambridge by scheduled train service from London, then travelled the short distance from the station by single decker bus,
part of the guided busway service.

Inside the research centre the Queen appeared fascinated as she peered down a powerful microscope to look at minute mice eggs and scientists explained their work trying to discover why some women trying to conceive produce abnormal eggs.

in the early hours of this morning left the Queen intrigued.

The new mother and her partner Stephen Tibbett, 44, proudly showed off their daughter, Charlotte Rose Tibbett Morris, when the Queen and Duke of Edinburgh toured a new £30 million extension to Cambridge’s Rosie Maternity Hospital.

Their baby had been crying seconds before the Queen arrived but as she walked into the room the infant fell silent.

Ms Morris went into labour at midnight yesterday and explained to the Queen she finally gave birth at 2.46am this morning to a daughter weighing 8lbs 3oz.

After speaking to the monarch she explained the benefits of the warmed water in the birth pool, saying ‘the heat is a bit relaxing and gives pain relief and water means you’re less weighted’.

The mother, a garden designer from the village of Impington near Cambridge, joked: ‘The Queen was interested in the birthing pool, maybe she’s doing some research for Kate – who knows,’.

The Duchess, who is around seven months pregnant, is due to give birth in mid-July and there is speculation she will have her baby in the private Lindo maternity wing of St Mary’s hospital in London.

Ms Morris added: ‘This has been a pretty amazing, magical day. About five years ago I was told the chances of me falling pregnant naturally were pretty remote.’

Plenty of A list celebrities have flooded into Cannes over the last week since the annual Film Festival kicked off once more.

But one star in particular has stood out more than most as she takes the festival by storm – Sharon Stone.

The 55-year-old actress has been at every major party and has stunned in her array of outfits for the night time events.

The morning after the night before: She didn’t look quite as pristine earlier in the morning as she emerged on Roberto Cavalli’s boat make-up free following the previous evening’s star-studded party

But she’s now shown she can also work the glamour in the day time as she roared into action once more on Thursday morning.

She had partied the night away on Roberto Cavalli’s yacht on Wednesday evening, alongside a whole host of stars including Adrien Brody, Paris Hilton and Uma Thurman.

During the night she impressed yet again in a sleek white trouser suit.

Sharon enjoyed a relaxed breakfast with the Cavalli family as she sat in a leopard print kaftan and scraped her blonde locks into a messy up ‘do.

But while her morning look was a far cry from how fans have seen her the rest of her time in Cannes, it wasn’t long before she pulled herself together once more.

She’s dared to bare her flesh throughout the 66th Cannes Film Festival so far and Thursday was no different as she stood out in the keyhole cut detailing and low back.

In September 2003, she was the first in North America to perform Epi-LASIK — a relatively new procedure that may avoid some of the risks associated with LASIK — in September 2003.

“Along with being noted for performing the first laser vision correction procedure… (McDonald) takes an active role in advancing women’s careers through mentoring,” Jan Beiting, president of Ophthalmic Women Leaders, said in a statement. “She is a trailblazer in every way.”

Ophthalmic Women Leaders announced in 2012 that she had won the organization’s Visionary Woman Award.

McDonald served as the director of the Southern Vision Institute in New Orleans from 1993 to 2005.

Today, she is a clinical professor of ophthalmology at NYU School of Medicine, and an adjunct clinical professor of ophthalmology at Tulane University Health Sciences Center in New Orleans.

Several pharmaceutical and medical device companies also use McDonald as a consultant.

The average British barbecue contains twice as many germs as a toilet seat, a disturbing new study has revealed.

Hygiene expert Dr Lisa Ackerley found the typical outdoor grill contains a staggering 1.7 million microbes per 100cm sq.

That makes it the grubbiest surface in the garden, with a worrying 124 per cent more germs than a toilet seat.

The above image shows where microbes are most concentrated in the typical garden, with red having the highest number of germs and yellow zones following closely behind.

Remarkably, these tests – carried out for cleaning brand Jeyes – were conducted on barbecues that looked clean to the naked eye.

High levels of microbes in the garden can indicate the presence of more sinister organisms and bacteria such as e-coli, salmonella and listeria.

And these can cause severe vomiting or diarrhoea if transferred to the burgers and sausages cooked on the grill, Dr Ackerley warned.

Despite our diligence in keeping the inside of our homes clean and germ free, most Britons overlook garden cleaning, the study of 1,400 people found.

In fact, a houseproud 71 per cent clean their kitchen table every day and 42 per cent scrub their toilet with the same regularity.

But just 28 per cent clean their patio table more than twice a year, and only 36 per cent wash their barbecue as often.

Dr Ackerley – one of the UK’s leading
food safety experts – found bin lids have the next highest bacterial count with 1.2 million microbes per 100 cm sq.

They pose a risk to householders taking out the rubbish and highlight the importance of washing hands, she said.

In fact, four of the six garden areas tested were found to contain more bacteria than a toilet seat – home to 759,950 microbes per 100 cm sq.

Bacteria in the garden can include decaying plant matter, dropped or spilled food as well as deposits from wild or domestic animals, including birds.

Enjoying food prepared outdoors is less appetising after the news that barbeques harbour more germs than toilets and bins

E-coli, salmonella and listeria are particularly dangerous for the very old and very young.

Dr Ackerley said: ‘We often see our gardens as an extension of our homes but they could become a reservoir of harmful bacteria.

‘They potentially give rise to illness and infection if transferred to your food or your mouth by your hands.

‘To help keep the family safe, I would suggest cleaning and disinfecting garden furniture and barbecues prior to use.

‘And, if you have small children, then remember to clean areas that may come into contact with their hands – such as decking and play equipment.

‘Using an appropriate disinfectant could significantly reduce this risk and lead to a healthier, safer outdoor experience for all.’
